Struggling with neck pain in Warrington?
If you're finding it difficult to:
- Turn your head freely without pain or stiffness
- Work at a computer without neck aching by the afternoon
- Sleep without neck pain waking you or causing headaches
You’re not alone — and you don’t have to just put up with it. Neck Pain is one of the most common conditions we treat at Stockton Heath Physiotherapy & Wellness. In most cases, it’s very treatable — without injections or surgery.
The good news
Does this sound like you?
Stiffness or limited movement when turning or tilting the head
Aching in the neck, shoulders or upper back
Sharp or burning pain radiating into the arm or hand
Pins and needles or numbness in the fingers
Headaches starting at the base of the skull
Neck pain that worsens with prolonged desk work or driving
Why does neck pain happen?
Neck pain is extremely common — but the cause varies considerably, and the right treatment depends on identifying it accurately. Mechanical neck pain from posture and muscle tension is the most common presentation and usually responds quickly to hands-on physiotherapy combined with movement and postural advice.
Cervical radiculopathy is more complex. It occurs when a nerve root in the neck is irritated or compressed — typically from a disc bulge or degenerative change — causing pain, tingling or numbness that travels into the arm or hand. This is often mistakenly attributed to shoulder problems or carpal tunnel. Correct diagnosis is essential because the treatment is specific to which nerve is involved and where.
Headaches that originate in the neck (cervicogenic headaches) are another commonly missed presentation. They typically feel like a band of pressure starting at the base of the skull, and they respond very well to manual therapy targeting the upper cervical joints.
Common contributing factors
- Prolonged desk work, screen time or driving in a sustained head position
- Disc bulge or degeneration causing nerve root irritation
- Joint stiffness in the cervical spine
- Muscle tension and trigger points in the neck and upper back
- Previous whiplash or neck injury that wasn’t fully rehabilitated
Why you shouldn’t ignore your neck pain
- Cervical radiculopathy with nerve compression can worsen without treatment, leading to persistent weakness or sensory loss
- Mechanical neck pain that’s ignored tends to recur with increasing frequency
- Untreated neck stiffness causes compensatory overload of the shoulders and upper back
- Cervicogenic headaches that aren’t treated at source tend to become more frequent over time
Early treatment = faster recovery. Most patients start to notice improvement within the first few sessions.
