Women’s health physiotherapy in Warrington — specialist care across every stage of life
Whether you’re pregnant, recently had a baby, or managing symptoms that have been part of your life for years — specialist women’s health physiotherapy can make a significant difference.
Many of the conditions we treat are ones women have been told to expect, live with, or manage alone.
These are not things you simply have to put up with. They are treatable — and the sooner they’re assessed, the better the outcome.
The good news
Most women’s health conditions respond very well to specialist physiotherapy. You don’t need surgery or medication to see significant improvement in most cases. The challenge is that many women wait years before seeking help — either because they’re told these symptoms are normal, or because they don’t know specialist physiotherapy exists for these conditions. It does. And our specialist women’s health physiotherapist assesses and treats the full range of pelvic health and musculoskeletal conditions that affect women across every stage of life.
What this service involves
During pregnancy
- Pelvic girdle pain (PGP) and symphysis pubis dysfunction (SPD) — pain in the pelvis, hips or lower back during pregnancy
- Back pain and sciatica in pregnancy — assessment and safe management
- Pelvic floor preparation for birth — exercises and education to support labour and reduce recovery time
- Rib pain, upper back pain and postural changes during pregnancy
- Guidance on activity and exercise that is safe at each stage of pregnancy
Postnatal rehabilitation
The postnatal period is one of the most important windows for women’s health physiotherapy — and one of the most underserved. Many women are cleared to return to exercise at their 6-week GP check without any assessment of pelvic floor function, scar healing or abdominal recovery. The result is often a return to symptoms weeks or months later.
The Mummy MOT is a comprehensive postnatal assessment we offer at SHPW. It covers everything your standard 6-week check doesn’t.
The Mummy MOT includes:
- Full postnatal history and symptom review
- Pelvic floor assessment — internal and external where appropriate, fully explained and consented
- Abdominal assessment — checking for diastasis recti (abdominal separation) and appropriate healing
- Scar assessment — C-section or perineal scar management and mobilisation
- Return-to-exercise guidance — a realistic, safe timeline based on your actual recovery, not a generic 6-week rule
- A personalised rehabilitation plan to support your recovery
- Stress urinary incontinence — leaking when coughing, sneezing, exercising or laughing
- Urgency incontinence — sudden urge to urinate with leaking
- Pelvic organ prolapse — assessment, education and rehabilitation
- Diastasis recti — abdominal separation affecting core function
- Birth injuries and perineal trauma
- Postnatal back and pelvic pain
Ongoing women’s health
Women’s health conditions don’t stop after the postnatal period. Prolapse, incontinence, pelvic pain and sexual health issues affect women across their 30s, 40s, 50s and beyond — and are more common and more treatable than most women realise.
We treat:
- Pelvic organ prolapse — physiotherapy-led conservative management, often avoiding or delaying surgery
- Bladder incontinence — stress, urgency and mixed presentations
- Bowel symptoms — urgency, incomplete emptying and related conditions
- Painful sex (dyspareunia) — assessment and treatment of pelvic floor dysfunction contributing to pain
- Vaginismus — specialist assessment and graduated rehabilitation
- Chronic pelvic pain (CPP) — persistent pelvic pain with a musculoskeletal component
- Menopause-related musculoskeletal changes — joint pain, pelvic floor changes, urogenital atrophy symptoms
- Osteoporosis and bone health — exercise prescription and falls prevention
- Perimenopause and menopause symptom support — physiotherapy-based management of musculoskeletal and pelvic symptoms
