One of the most common injuries I see patients with at Daniel Massey Physiotherapy is back pain. Patients come to see us from all over Warrington, Appleton, Stockton Heath and Lymm with concerns about their backs.
Back pain can be very painful and very disabling, but contrary to popular belief the severity of pain does not always determine “how bad the injury is”. This is just one of many myths about back pain.
Below we have put together 4 “Back Pain Myths” based on the latest clinic research.
Myth Number 1
Moving will make my back pain worse.
People fear twisting and bending but it’s essential to keep moving. Gradually increase how much you are doing, and stay on the go.
Myth Number 2
I should avoid exercise, especially weight training.
Back pain shouldn’t stop you enjoying exercise of regular activities. In fact, studies found that continuing with these can help you get better sooner including using weights where appropriate.
Myth Number 3
A scan will show me exactly what is wrong.
Sometimes it will, but most often it won’t. Also, even people without back pain have changes in their spine so scans can cause fear that influences behavior, making the problem worse.
Myth Number 4
Pain equals damage.
This was the established view but more recent research has changed our thinking. Modern physio takes a holistic approach that helps people understand why there are in pain.
If you are having problems with your back, please get in contact with us so we can help you return to the things you enjoy doing as quickly as possible. Whether you wish to see us in Stockton Heath, or arrange a home visit in Lymm and Appleton, we are here for you.
